Why does it cost what it does ?

A septic pump-out isn’t just about removing the waste, it also covers the costs of transporting and legally disposing of it. Every house has a dumping fee that we pay to the RM that you are located within. This fee is not included in your property taxes; it’s a cost we must pay every time we dispose. That’s why it’s built into the price you see for your pump-out, along with fuel, equipment, and labor.

Whats the difference between a holding tank and septic tank ?

A holding tank is a sealed container that stores all the wastewater from your home or building. It doesn’t let anything out, so when it’s full, it needs to be pumped out and hauled away.

A ball tank with a field (also called a septic tank with a drain field) works differently. Wastewater flows into the tank where solids settle to the bottom, then the liquid effluent slowly drains out into a field of underground pipes or trenches. The soil naturally filters and treats the water.

The big difference:

A holding tank only stores waste (like a big bucket) and must be emptied often.
A tank with a field treats and releases wastewater into the ground, so it doesn’t need pumping as often

Why is the cost significantly higher for septic fields during the winter ?

A septic field is considered septage and can only be dumped at the RM lagoon between June 15 and October 15. After that date, all field waste has to be hauled to the Winnipeg dumping station, which costs approximately $200 per load. This is why during the off-season, it’s significantly more expensive to have a field pumped out compared to the summer months. Having you field pumped out Yearly will mainain your system and cost less if it becomes emergent in the winter.

Why can’t septage go to the lagoons year-round?

Municipal lagoons are designed to handle household wastewater (from holding tanks and septic tanks), not large amounts of septage from fields during the colder months. Once the ground freezes and the lagoon is capped with ice, the natural biological treatment process slows down. Adding field septage at that time would overwhelm the system and risk contamination or improper treatment.

That’s why most RMs only allow septage dumping between June 15 and October 15 when the lagoon is open, warm, and active. Outside of that window, septage must be taken to specialized treatment facilities (like Winnipeg’s dumping station) that can process it safely year-round.
